THE DEVELOPMENT OF RELIGIOUS TOURISM IN UZBEKISTAN
Abstract
The overarching objective of this thesis is to conduct a comprehensive examination of the multifaceted development of religious tourism within the unique context of Uzbekistan. This involves a detailed analysis of the existing landscape, encompassing the rich tapestry of Islamic heritage sites that dot the country, from the majestic mosques of Samarkand and Bukhara to the revered Sufi shrines scattered across its ancient lands. Furthermore, the thesis seeks to understand the intricate web of factors that are actively shaping the trajectory of this specialized tourism sector. This includes a critical evaluation of the governmental policies and strategic initiatives that have been implemented to promote and facilitate religious pilgrimages and heritage-based travel. It also necessitates an exploration of the burgeoning global interest in spiritual journeys and cultural immersion experiences, and how Uzbekistan, with its historical significance along the Silk Road, is positioned to capitalize on these evolving trends.
