Abstract: Indexing is one of the most common performance tuning methods used in relational database management systems, most specifically Oracle Database. Oracle supports different types of indexing structures to improve data access performance and reduce system utilization. This paper covers the types of indexes in Oracle database; B-tree, bitmap, function-based, partitioned, etc.; querying Execution Plans, and performance aspects. Best practices and pitfalls encountered in index design will be covered to assist database practitioners in making informed design decisions. Oracle Database 19c is referenced herein to illustrate the previously discussed principles.
