Abstract

Multilingualism is increasingly recognized as a global phenomenon, influencing cognitive processes and language development in unique ways. This paper explores how knowing multiple languages affects linguistic competence, metalinguistic awareness, and cognitive flexibility across different age groups. Drawing on recent empirical studies, it examines the benefits of multilingual exposure, such as enhanced vocabulary acquisition, improved problem-solving skills, and greater adaptability in learning new languages. The paper also addresses potential challenges, including language interference and unequal proficiency across languages. The findings highlight the pedagogical implications for language education, emphasizing strategies that harness the advantages of multilingualism to optimize language development in both monolingual and multilingual contexts.
