Abstract

This study explores the influence of a learner’s native language (L1) on acquiring a second language (L2). It examines both the benefits and challenges of L1 in L2 learning, focusing on linguistic transfer, cognitive development, and
interference. Using a qualitative research approach, data were collected through case studies, interviews with language learners and educators, and literature reviews. The findings indicate that while L1 provides a foundation for L2 learning, it can also
introduce difficulties such as grammatical errors and pronunciation challenges. The study suggests that structured bilingual education and comparative linguistic instruction can enhance L2 acquisition while minimizing L1 interference.
