LOCALIZATION OF RUSSIAN FOLK TALES IN TRANSLATION: THEORETICAL ASPECTS AND CHALLENGES OF CONVEYING CULTURAL SPECIFICITY

Abstract

This article explores the theoretical aspects of localizing Russian folktales and examines the challenges associated with preserving cultural identity in their adaptation for an English-speaking audience. It defines localization in comparison to traditional translation and highlights key differences between these processes. Special attention is given to the analysis of culturally-specific lexis found in Russian folktales, their semantic and symbolic significance, and the strategies used for their translation. The study examines major translation techniques such as transliteration, calquing, adaptation, analogy, and the use of explanatory notes. The article discusses the difficulties of maintaining cultural associations and imagery, as well as the risk of meaning loss due to excessive adaptation. A comparative analysis of translated folktale realia and their impact on text perception is provided. The study concludes with recommendations on selecting optimal localization strategies that balance the authenticity of the original and accessibility for the target audience.
